Games for 2016

Postby Madison » Mon Feb 16, 2015 6:12 pm

Throwing this out here to get a discussion started on what games we would like, and with whom.

Wow, way in advance!

First thoughts after finishing the fest:

1. Might consider Atlantic Wall IF I can learn it face to face rather than through that godawful rule book. Assuming that Merv is right on in saying that it isn't terribly more complicated, it's just a terribly written rule set. However, would really hope that the game can be played fast enough that a reasonable part of the battle could be played. If it's so intricate that it's "landing plus three days" it's probably best done at Merv's house.

2. Gotta say I've got some interest in Gettysburg with Last Chance For Victory. Tom Beach showed me some of the system and it looks both simple enough to play and intricate enough that you have to pay attention to get the most out of it.

3. Der Weltkrieg is possible, though the theme doesn't really grab me.

After feeling badly for several days over Jim's passing, a trip up to Sandusky was just what the MD ordered. Allen Beach and myself were able to renew some old friendships and meet some new people.

I for one was very impressed with the progress made on AW by Merv, Shawn, Tom and Dave. Getting to June 9 or later was an accomplishment and proved to me that the game is playable.

2016's candidates for me would be Case Blue, if Troy is still up for it, Beyond the Rhine (OCS), or Last Chance for Victory.

Thanks to everyone for their words about Jim.

Gold Juno Sword, the first part of a three part mega monster on Overlord and Normandy. GTS system.

Four Maps

SIXTEEN countersheets!!

Quick, hide the internet so Merv doesn't find out!!

1. I believe 4 people tried out SPW's Der Weltkrieg and all seemed to enjoy it (or so I was told. I would suggest this as the 1914 campaign ( or any year) can actually be done in a week.

2. Civil war games. On the last day some interest was voiced for Great Campaigns of the Civil War and the upcoming GMT revision of Victory Games ACW. Of course, any tactical game of the period would be great also.

Since there is more to war than WWII lets get some games going in these other eras.

The SPW WWI game still has some interest from me, beyond that, I have nothing so far. Maybe I could come around to the combined Market-Garden game again.

I'd be all for The Seven Day's Civil War Game. Could the Union Army have done better with a different Army commander? Play either side though. I too had a great time at Winterfest 2015, in my second attendance at this event.

Another thought on a game to be tried ( it gets talked about at every Winterfest I have been at) is the old AH Jutland which would work out great on the ballroom floor. In my experiance from many years ago as a kid it seemed that once the fleets found each other and started banging away one side or the other realized they were in a bad way, laid lots of smoke and destroyer torpedo attacks and ran away loosing a few ships. Just like the real thing!!!. Still, it was fun.

Never played seven Days, but I am up for any Civil War game .

I am up for any Civil war game - perhaps the regimental system or the new system touted by MMP?
Seven Day's Campaign
Gettysburg
Shiloh
Chickamauga
1st and 2nd Bull Run
Overland Campaign
Antietam
